Nuestras playas recibieron ayer por la tarde la visita de una especie inofensiva con un nombre precioso: Velella-Velalla. Las playas de Orihuela Costa se cubrieron con un manto azul brillante que esta mañana aun dejaba rastros en la arena. La amistosa invasión ha afectado a toda la costa mediterránea, desde la Costa Brava hasta las Islas Baleares o la Manga del Mar Menor.
Aunque pueden confundirse con medusas, en realidad se trata de hidrozoos que han sido arrastrados por el mar de fondo de los últimos días. Tienen un efecto urticario muy bajo por lo que son inofensivos para el ser humano y sirven de alimento para las tortugas marinas que cada vez con más frecuencia nos visitan en su época desove.
Orihuela’s beaches covered with a harmless blue blanket of seaweed
Our beaches were visited yesterday afternoon by a harmless species with a beautiful name: Velella-Velalla. The beaches of Orihuela Costa were covered with a bright blue blanket which this morning still left traces on the sand. The friendly invasion has affected the entire Mediterranean coast, from the Costa Brava to the Balearic Islands to La Manga del Mar Menor.
Although they can be mistaken for jellyfish, they are actually hydrozoans that have been washed up in the swell of the last few days. They have a very low urticaria effect and are therefore harmless to humans and serve as food for the sea turtles that are visiting us more and more frequently during their nesting season.
